- He was born during the Great Trek in Reddersburg in the Orange Free State. He was sixty one years and twenty one days old when he died on his farm Malanskraal in the Heidelburg district. He was married twice. First marriage to Johanna Elizabeth Viljoen.
After the death of his first wife Willem Andries Stephanus married Johanna Susanna Lindeque the widow of Johannes Andries Holtzhausen. WAS & JS Gouws had seven children: Susanna Josina (born 26.8.1867); Maria Elizabeth (born 20.9.1872); Gert Johannes Stephanus (born 18.3.1875); Andries Stephanus Petrus(born 16.11.1877, nicknamed Lang Andries); Stephanus Petrus (born 2.9.1880); Geziena Catharina Frederika Wilhelmiena (born 10.11.1886); Johannes Marthina (!) Petronella (!) Jakobus (born 24.12.1888, called Koos). Susanna Josina Gouws was married to Marthinus Johannes Bekker and their eldest son was named Johannes Stephanus Bekker.
