8. | Lord William Duff, of Braco, 1st Earl of Fife was born about 1696 in Scotland (son of William Duff, of Dipple and Braco and Jean Gordon, of Edinglassie); died on 30 Sep 1763 in Rothiemay Castle, Morayshire, Scotland. Notes:
He was Member of Parliament for Banffshire from 1727–34, and was created Lord Braco of Kilbryde in the Peerage of Ireland on 28 July 1735, and Earl Fife and Viscount Macduff, also in the peerage of Ireland, by letters patent dated 26 April 1759, after proving his descent from the MacDuffs, Earls of Fife.
He commissioned the construction of Duff House in Banff in 1740 William Duff, Baron Braco, 1st Earl of Fife, died in 1763 at Rothiemay Castle and was buried in the parish church of Grange, before being moved to the mausoleum at Duff House. Rothiemay Castle was demolished in 1964 and Rothiemay House later constructed.
By the Countess Jean he had five sons and six daughters. The eldest, James, succeeded his father as Earl. On his death without issue in 1809, he was succeeded by his younger brother Alexander. Another son, Arthur, became a member of Parliament.
William married Jean Grant about 1723. Jean (daughter of Sir James Grant, 6th Baronet of Colquhoun and Dame Anne Colquhoun, Heiress to 21st of Colquhoun and 23rd of Luss) was born on 28 Sep 1705 in Luss, Alexandria, Scotland; died on 16 Jan 1788 in Milltown of Rothiemay, Huntly, Scotland.
