    He was a Scottish nobleman known as James Duff, 5th Earl Fife, the son of Sir Alexander Duff, younger brother of James Duff, 4th Earl Fife, and Anne Stein, the daughter of James Stein of Gilbogie.

    He was Member of Parliament for Banffshire from 1837 to 1857; his brother, George Skene Duff, was Member of Parliament for Elgin Burghs.

    He was created Baron Skene, of Skene, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, in 1857. This allowed him to sit and vote in the House of Lords.[1]

    In 1845, he resided at 30 Pall Mall, London and at Delgatie Castle.

    In 1846 he married Lady Agnes Georgiana Elizabeth Hay, daughter of William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll and Lady Elizabeth FitzClarence (an illegitimate daughter of William IV).

    They had five children.

    - Lady Anne Duff, married John Townshend, 5th Marquess Townshend, and had issue.
    - Lady Ida Duff, married firstly, Adrian Hope and had issue. Married secondly William Wilson, with no issue.
    - Sir Alexander William George Duff, created Duke of Fife in 1889. He Married Princess Louise, the daughter of Edward VII.
    - Lady Alexina Duff, married Henry Coventry, with no issue.
    - Lady Agnes Cecil Emmeline Duff, married firstly George Hay-Drummond, son of George Hay-Drummond, 12th Earl of Kinnoull, and had issue. Married secondly Herbert Flower, with no issue. Married thirdly Alfred Cooper, with issue. David Cameron, the UK Prime Minister, is a descendant of this third marriage.

    James married Lady Agnes Georgiana Elizabeth Hay on 16 Mar 1846. Agnes was born on 12 May 1829; died on 18 Dec 1869 in London, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Colonel of the 37th (North Hampshire) Regiment of Foot 1831–1851. He was a British Army officer of the Napoleonic era. In 1793 he was commissioned an ensign in the 66th Regiment of Foot, and served at Gibraltar, in Flanders, in the East Indies in 1798, and under Baird during the invasion of Egypt.

    In 1806, Duff commanded the centre column in the attack on Buenos Aires. He was appointed colonel of the 37th Regiment of Foot in 1831, was made GCH in 1834, and was promoted general in 1838. From 1848 until his death. He was Lord Lieutenant of Elginshire, and was a deputy lieutenant of Banffshire. Colonel of the 37th (North Hampshire) Regiment of Foot in the years of 1831–1851.

    Duff married Anne Stein, by whom he had two sons and two daughters, including James Duff, 5th Earl Fife and George Skene Duff.

    Alexander was a younger brother of James Duff, 4th Earl Fife.

    He died aged 73 on the 21st March 1851 at Percy Cross, Walham Green, Fulham, Middlesex, England.
