  • Notes
    • Elizabeth, a devout Quaker, was the mother of William & Benjamin by her husband William Rush, son of William and Anne (Gray) Rush. Her husband was born about 1665 and his father gave him 100 acres on the "south side towards the head of Upper Machodoc Creek" through a deed of gift on 22 Jul 1689.[1]

      "At Court on 26 January 1708/09 Elizabeth Rush was granted Administration of the estate of William Rush . . . final accounting of the payments and disbursements against the estate [was] March, 1712." His estate was divided into thirds: 1/3 to Elizabeth and 1/3 to "eldest son" William . . . "suggests that the final third of the estate went to a second son, Benjamin Rush Sr., who would have been a minor at this date and therefore not mentioned."

      Elizabeth Rush, widow of William Rush (mother of Benjamin Sr, grandmother of Benjamin Jr.), married William Duff Sr, whose 1741 will was on record in King George County, Virginia by 1745.

      "On 2 August 1745 Robert Green, Gent., came into Court and qualified as executor of the Will of William Duff, deceased... (KING GEORGE COUNTY ORDER BOOK, page 456)"
      Elizabeth's will was dated 27 October 1746 and on file 2 MAR 1749/50 (KING GEORGE COUNTY WILLS BOOK, pages 234 – 235). It included mention of

      son Benjamin Rush {Sr.}
      youngest daughters viz. Elizabeth, Jane, Alis
      William Green (a son of Robert Green, Gent.) "and desire that he may not let it [a table] be made use of in an Ordinary (Tavern)."
      Benjamin Rush, the son of William Rush {IV}, deceased...
      [items to be divided among] eight of William Rush {IV}’s children and one of Benjamin Rush {I}’s children named as followeth: Benjamin Rush, Crafford Rush, John Rush, James Rush, Elizabeth McColester, Mary Rush formerly so called, Ann and Sarah being sons and daughters of William Rush, and Amey Grigsby being the daughter of the said Benjamin Rush {I}.....
      grandson, Benjamin Rush {Jr.}, son of Benjamin Rush {Sr.}...that he pay his father and sisters the above mentioned money.....
      appoint my grandson Benjamin Rush {Jr.}, the son of Benjamin Rush {Sr.}, Executor....and Evan Price Executor to this my last Will....." Presented by Benjamin Rush Junior, executor. Proved by Thomas Robeson and Thomas Macey. Admitted to Record. Test: Harry Turner, Clerk.
