Johanna “Anneke” Fultz, 65, Logansport, passed away at 8:11 a.m. Monday, May 13, 2013, in Chase Center, after a painful battle with cancer.. Born July 1, 1947, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Anneke was the daughter of Peter van Gompel and Emma Visser, both of Amsterdam. While vacationing in Hanau, Germany with her parents, Anneke met Jack Fultz who was serving in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Hanau. After a year of long-distance dating (seven hours by train), Anneke and Jack were married in Amsterdam, honeymooned in Paris and settled in Hanau.
With Jack having nearly completed his tour of duty, Anneke, now eight months pregnant, flew from Frankfort, Germany, to Indianapolis where she met her in-laws, Jack M. and Georgia Fultz, for the first time May 5, 1966. They had only known each other through letters and a couple phone calls. On May 16, Anneke gave birth to Tamara Donnella Fultz.. On June 6, 1966, Jack returned to Logansport and saw his daughter for the first time. After a few months, Anneke started working at the Logansport Gossard Factory as a seamstress, a job she held before quitting to become as full-time housewife..
Anneke had a diverse list of interests. She loved to read romance mysteries. For several years, she served at one time or another as every elected office of the City of Bridges Jim Beam Bottle Collectors club. She attended years of district club meetings throughout the Midwest, once crossing paths with an elevator full of Secret Service agents assigned to protecting Walter Mondale while he was campaigning for the presidency..
On March 5, 2010, Anneke applied for and passed all the requirements to become an American citizen. That was probably the proudest day of her life. She went on to become a precinct vice chairman and worked on the campaigns of several state and national politicians.. Anneke loved to go to casinos from Las Vegas to Atlantic City hoping to strike it rich on the penny slot machines. She loved to collect Santa Clauses, having several hundred from Holland, Africa, Australia, the U.S. and even one or two made in China.
She also got involved with a well-known breeder of championship Bichon Frize dogs. She soon had her first rescue dog, and started helping the breeder with welping puppies, grooming and helping at shows throughout the Midwest. This soon lead to camping and the purchase of a fifth-wheel second home. She shortly had her second dog, one who was loveable but not show quality. When the breeder became unable to continue, she awarded Anneke with a third dog, one who had won a national specialty show championship. These three four-legged children became the loves of her life along with her daughter and grandsons.. Anneke was preceded in death by both parents, a brother and several nieces and nephews..
Survivors include husband Jack, Logansport; daughter, Tamara and grandson, Cody, both of Wheeling, Ill.; grandson Brett, Chicago; one brother and several nieces and nephews scattered all around the globe..
Memorial contributions may be made in Anneke’s name to the “Wounded Warrior Project.”. Arrangements have been made with Kroeger Funeral Home with Father Mike McKinney officiating. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday, with visitation from noon to 2 p.m. before the funeral. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.. Condolences may be left online at www.kroegerfuneralhome.com.
