- Bertha (Franz) Goossen Obituary
Bertha (Franz) Goossen was born August 17, 1908, just north of Goessel, Kansas. Her parents were Peter J. and Anna (Schmidt) Franz. She was the oldest of 7 children.
Bertha trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior at a young age. She was baptized on May 23, 1926, by Rev. Peter H. Unruh and received as a member into the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.
On October 4, 1929, she joined hands with Alvin Goossen in holy matrimony. Shortly after the wedding they moved to a rented farm in Thomas County where they lived for 12 years. When the Meadow Mennonite Church organized in 1937 they became charter members of the new church. Bertha enjoyed teaching the children in the Sunday School.
In 1942 they moved on to their own farm which was near Mingo, Kansas. While living on the farm they were instrumental in bringing to America the Abraham Arendt family, who had fled Russia during World War II. In 1951, Bertha became a member of the Gideon Auxiliary and experienced many spiritual blessings handing out white Testaments to nurses.
Due to Father's heart condition they left the farm in 1959 and moved to Newton, Kansas. Shortly thereafter
they became members of the Newton Bible Church. Later in 1972 they joined the Garden Mennonite Church. It was there, in 1979, that Father and Mother celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with all of their children and grandchildren present.
Bertha always enjoyed entertaining guests. Visiting ministers, missionaries, friends, and especially the children and grandchildren were always welcome. She
enjoyed flowers and liked to sew, crochet, and travel with her family. The children were very dear to her
and she prayed for them daily. Her love will never be forgotten.
In 1982, Bertha became seriously ill and underwent open heart surgery at St. Francis hospital in Wichita.
By the grace of God she slowly recovered from the surgery, however she never regained complete strength.
In December of 1983, Alvin and Bertha moved to an apartment at the Memorial Home in Moundridge, Kansas. Bertha's health continued to deteriorate and in 1987 she was admitted into the Memorial Home. It was there that she passed away on Monday, February 12, 1990 and joined her Savior in glory.
Bertha is survived by her deeply sorrowing husband Alvin: Paul and his wife Hildegard, Wayland, Iowa; Susie and her husband Jake Barkman, Elkhart, Kansas; Alva and his wife Linda, Plevna, Kansas: Elsie of Boulder, Colorado; 13 grandchildren and their spouses, 17 great grandchildren, 1 brother, 3 sisters and many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother and 1 sister.
