    • Rachel Rebecca (Schmidt) Goossen Obituary

      Rachel Rebecca Goossen was born on January 23, 1916 in Walton, Kansas to Abram and Sarah Schmidt. She passed this life on December 9, 2004, at the age of eighty-eight years and ten and a half months. She was the second of five children. The family attended the Tabor Mennonite Church near Goessel, Kansas. There she accepted the Lord as her Saviour and was baptized by Henry Schmidt.

      On May 27, 1936, Rachel married Edward D. Goossen and in June moved to western Kansas to live in a box car on Frank Goossen's place. They moved to a dug out three miles west and two and a quarter mile south of Mingo and later moved to the farm that Lynn Goossen lives. Rachel spent the last seven and a half years in the Prairie Senior Living Center.

      Rachel and Ed were one of the founders of the Meadow Mennonite Church in Mingo, which later became the Mingo Bible Church.

      Rachel enjoyed playing the piano and often sang duets with Ed at church. She also taught Sunday School and had Child Evangelism classes in the area. The Gideons Auxiliary was a very big part of her life and loved sharing the Word of God with others.

      Rachel also enjoyed gardening and cooking for the family, especially when our friends would come along with us. Her apple tart and hot chocolate always was a hit on Saturday evening for supper.

      As a family we remember the Bible reading and prayer that was a custom every day before the day started. We remember prayers for each of the children and later grandchildren or great=grandchildren. We are very thankful for the spiritual guidance that our parents gave us. They gave us the foundation to live and to pass on the things of God to our children and friends.
