    • Net als zijn broer Willem begon Dirk een eigen brandstoffenhandel. Via zijn schoonouders kwam hij in het bezit van het caf? De Raaf met bijbehorende stalhouderij aan de Breedstraat, hoek Vlaanderhof. Zelf bemoeide Dirk zich niet zo met het caf?, dat werd vooral door zijn vrouw gedaan, terwijl hijzelf meer de brandstoffenhandel voor zijn rekening nam. In het begin ventte hij nog met een handkar, later met een vrachtauto. Toen zijn compagnon Korsten overleed, werd zoon Ben bij de orgelfabriek Pels weggehaald om in de zaak te helpen. Deze zou tenslotte de zaak overnemen.
