    Alexander Brodie, who became the founder of the LETHEN Family, having purchased the barony of Lethen, in 1622, from Sir John Grant ;

    with the Abbey lands of Kinloss, from Thomas, Lord Bruce of Kinloss, also the lands of Pitgavenie, in 1630, from Alexander Hay of Kinudie, and also during the rule of the English in the North, the Laird of Lethen in 1651 and 1652 sold the stones of Kinloss Abbey to be employed in building the citadel of Inverness.'

    Subsequent dilapidations for the purpose of building dykes and cottages have left the ruins a sad spectacle of a vener- able ecclesiastical building, apparently used as a farm-steading for keeping poultry and swine !

    Mr. John Brodie, was educated for the Church, and his name occurs as a student in King's College, Aberdeen, in 1606. He became, in 1624, on the death of his maternal grandfather, minister of Auldern and Dean of Moray. He died, as stated in his Nephew's Diary, on the 7th of January, 1655.
    I can not find any record of his being married. But his wife was Elspet Ronald. Both the Peerage and Geni.com state that he had a daughter.Nowhere can I find reference to a wife/mother. I am going to attach the daughter Janet, being aware that this might not be correct.

    Mr. Joseph Brodie was also educated for the Church, in King's College, Aberdeen, where he took his degree as Master of Arts, in 1620. He was instituted as minister of Keith, 27th June, 1631. He was present at the memorable Glasgow Assembly in 1638; and was translated to Forres, in December, 1646. He died 27th of October, 1656. The Laird of Brodie speaks of this minister with great affection, when they joined together, with other relations, at Leathen, in January, 1654, in renewing their solemn Covenant engagements on two days set apart for private humiliation and devotional exercises.

    During the Civil Wars of the 17th century Alexander Brodie of Brodie was responsible for the destruction of Elgin Cathedral in 1640.

    In 1643 Alexander Brodie of Brodie became a Member of Parliment for Moray and an Elder of the Forres Presbytety to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

    In 1645 Brodie Castle was burnt down by Lewis Gordon 3rd Earl of Huntly and Chief of Clan Gordon. This was part of the Covenanting conflict during the Civil War, as a result there are few surviving documents and little is known about the Clan Brodie.

    Alexander Brodie was one of the six commissioners that were sent to The Hague to negotiate with Charles Stuart. They were there to persuade Charles II to sign the National Covenant and resume the Scottish Crown. On his return to Parliment he was made a Lord of Session (a senior justice).

    Alexander Brodie's diplomatic career also included a summons by Cromwell to London in 1651 to consider a Scottish union with England. He resisted attempts to appoint him to judicial office, though Cromwell's death in 1658 forced the issue for him, and he was appointed Justice of the Peace. The consequence was royal disfavour following the Restoration, Charles II finding it hard to forgive men who had tried to force their Presbyerian beliefs upon him as the price of their allegiance. The Good Laird Brodie died May 5th, 1680.

    Alexander Brodie, 19th of that Ilk was a Scottish clan chief and politician from Moray. He sat in the House of Commons of Great Britain for 34 years from 1720 to 1754, as a government supporter. For 27 years he was Lord Lyon King of Arms, the most junior of the Scottish Great Officers of State, responsible for regulating the heraldry of Scotland.

    He died of heart failure. His body was brought back to Moray and buried at Dyke, close to Brodie Castle.

    James was born in 1744. He was the eldest son of James Brodie Laird of Spynie. He was not born to become Chief of the Name and the Brodie family, but found himself becoming the 21st Brodie of Brodie by default when the senior family line ended in the male line. Lord Lt. of Nairnshire.

    James Brodie of Brodie, 21st Thane and Chief of Clan Brodie, FRS FLS (31 August 1744 – 17 January 1824) was a Scottish politician and botanist. He was educated at Elgin Academy and St. Andrews University. He was returned to parliament in 1796 as MP for Elginshire, serving until 1807. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Nairn.

    As a botanist, Brodie specialised in cryptogamic flora, i.e. plants which reproduce by spores, such as algae, ferns and mosses. He discovered a number of new species both around Edinburgh and on his own property at Brodie. His collection is now held at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. He corresponded with other eminent botanists of his time, including Sir William Jackson Hooker and Sir James Edward Smith. Brodie was elected a Fellow of the Linnaean Society in 1795, and of the Royal Society in 1797.[2] The genus Brodiaea is named in his honour.

    Alfred Brodie was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, as the 5th of 12 children of Rev. Dr. Alexander Brodie (1773-1828), vicar in Eastbourne since 1809, and Anna Walter (1779-1864), a daughter of the founder of The Times. After childhood in The Gore (Eastbourne), he matriculated in 1827 at the Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was an Admitted Pensioner before moving in 1830 to Magdalene College, Cambridge, to become a Fellow Commoner. He did not graduate, but did businesses in London and Hastings until he married (as Esq. of Eastbourne) in 1834 to the 48 years old Mary Anne Fenning (1786-1869), daughter of merchant Samuel Fenning (1746-1826) who had been Acting Director of the Royal Exchange¤ Assurance Office. They had no children.

    In 1837 he went insolvent and ended in prison, but the case was adjourned. In 1839, he had to sell his inherited interest in The Times. Then he also arranged it so that he would receive an annual amount of money if he should outlive his wife. That did not happen. They moved to Marylebone (Cavendish-square), London, near her birthplace in Islington, and continued business. He was a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club* (1848) and The Highland Society# (1850), and one of the directors in Beacon Life and Assurance (1856). Yet, he had an old debt and only £200 when he died in Eastbourne.

    He is today best known for two losses to Howard Staunton in the London (1851) chess tournament.

    Malcolm Frederick Brodie, one of the English colony which came to Le Mars sixty years ago, died July 21 in Sacred Heart hospital, where he had been a patient the past three months.

    Mr. Brodie was born February 10, 1861, in Eastbourne, England, the son of Wm. and Jane Moore Brodie, and came to Plymouth county when he was 20 years old. He lived on a farm near Crathhorne until he moved to Le Mars, On July 21, 1885, he was married to Margaret Ross, who with one daughter, Helen May King, and two sons, John and Colin, preceded him in death.

    Mr. Brodie is survived by five sons, Charles of Merrill, Stewart of Mapleton; Ronald of Alhambra, California, Robert of Akron and William of Le Mars. There are 16 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. A brother Stewart, and a sister, Mrs. Grace Heisch, live in Eastbourne, England, and another sister, Mrs. Edith Davidson, lives in the Isle of Wight.

    Mr. Brodie has been in failing health since the death of his wife in March 1945. As long as his health permitted he was an active worker in the Presbyterian church of which he was a lifelong member. Funeral services were hid at the Mauer Funeral Home at 2 p. m. Thursday and at Plymouth Presbyterian church at 2:30 p. m. with Rev. John Oerter, of the First Presbyterian church, Le Mars, officiating. Burial was in the Plymouth church cemetery at Crathhorne.

    Captain Douglas Edward Brodie, 3rd Battalion the Cameron Highlanders. Son of Hugh Fife Ashley Brodie of Brodie Castle, Forres, and of Lady Eleanor, daughter of Henry Reynolds-Morenton, second Earl of Ducie. Born at Brodie Castle. Educated at Summerfields, Oxford and Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire. In 1897 he joined the British South Africa Company in London and for the next eighteen years was closely connected with development work in South Africa, being appointed successively Joint Assistant Secretary and Secretary of the Company. He also acted as Joint Secretary to the Rhodes Trust and for a time as Secretary to the Rhodesia and Mashonaland Railway Company and the African Trans-Continental Telegraph Company. His work brought him into association with Mr. Cecil Rhodes, Sir Alfred Beit, Sir Starr Jameson, Earl Grey and other distinguished South Africa pioneers. He was released at his own request from the Company's service in June 1915 and obtained a commission in the Cameron Highlanders, joining at Invergordon, Scotland. Was sent to join the Cameron Highlanders in France. He was promoted to Captain shortly before he was killed in action on the Somme, France aged 42 years when attached to the 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders. He is also commemorated on a family grave in the Brodie Castle Burial Ground, Forres, Moray, Scotland (see Find a Grave Memorial 208445718).

    He was one of three brothers who were educated at Winchester College. Captain Alastair William Matthew Brodie, Seaforth Highlanders, died in the Second Boer War (see Find a Grave Memorial 214586775) and the other brother, Ronald Hugh Brodie fought in WW1, was twice wounded, won the MC and survived the war.

    YOUNG MEN DROWNED ARTHUR ERICKSEN AND COLIN BRODIE DIE TOGETHER ONE TRIED TO SAVE THE OTHER

    Fatality Occurred in Mink Creek on Sunday Afternoon When They Were Engaged In Stretching a Seine Across the Stream. Two families are plunged in grief over a tragedy which occurred on Sunday afternoon when Arthur Dricksen and Colin Brodie, two well known young men in this community, lost their lives by drowning.

    Just how the fatality occurred will never be precisely known as there were no eye witnesses and just what happened is largely a matter of conjecture. In the afternoon Colin Brodie was visiting his brother-in-law, Arthur Ericksen, at the latter's home near Brunsville and in company with the hired man. Bernard Goedert, they went down to the Mink Creek, which flows through the Ericksen farm to fish. The had seine with them and started to put it across the creek which at the point they were at is widened by a large pool.

    The found the rope was too short and Goodert went back to the house to get a rope. When some time later Goedert returned to the creek he could see no trace of his companions, although he saw some clothing on the bank. He thought the other two were playing a prank on him and had gone to some other part of the creek. He waited around for sometime and at length becoming alarmed he commenced a search and finding no trace of them went to the Ihnke Harms house and with Fred Dirks and young Harms began to make further search.

    Dirks went into the water and repeatedly dived at the spot where the clothing was on the bank. He had made several attempts and had nearly concluded to desist from his efforts when his foot caught in the net. As he came up he grabbed the net with one hand and as he did so the head of Arthur Ericksen bobbed up above the water before the eyes of the horrified spectators. The body of Colin Brodie was found lying in shallower water a little distance from the place where that of Arthur was dragged to the surface. Ericksen had on his clothes while young Brodie was stripped off.

    It is assumed that one or the other got tangled up in the net and that his companion went to his assistance and both met death. Both were good swimmers. The bodies were taken in a handcar along the railroad track to Brunsville. Physicians were hurriedly on the spot but their services were of no avail as it is supposed the youths had been dead for more than two hours. The fist body was pulled out of the stream at half past six and the other half an hour later. Hundreds of people flocked to the scene of the accident from Le Mars and surrounding points. The grief of the relatives at the sudden disaster is deep and consolation and sympathy are offered by many friends who in their words of condolence feel that only the gentle and healing hand of time can assuage the grief of the heart-stricken widow, the parents, brothers, and sisters in their terrible loss. Both of the unfortunate young men who met death while attempting to save each other were born and reared in this county.

    Colin Douglas Brodie was the fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Brodie, of this city, and was born in Le Mars on December 17, 1896, being seventeen years and six months old. His early years were spent on the Brodie farm a mile south of town and when his parents moved to town some time ago he attended the city schools. He was in his third year in the high school and was in exceptionally bright and clever, fine appearing, strong and athletic and a general favorite with his associates. Besides his bereaved parents he leaves one sister and six brothers to mourn his early death. They are Mrs. Arthur Ericksen, Chas. John, Stuart, Ronald, William and Robert.

    Colin was well liked by all with whom he came in contact and his sad fate, cut off in the first flush of dawning young manhood, is a source of sorrow to many friends who extend deepest sympathy to the afflicted ones. Funeral services for the young men will be held, as is fitting, conjointly on the same day and their bodies will be laid to rest in the quiet country church cemetery at Crathorne, near the church in which in their early years they attended Sunday school and heard the teachings of a divine love and a future inheritance. A brief service will be conducted at the Brodie home, south of Crathorne, today at one o'clock, followed by a brief service at the Ericksen home and services will be held at the Crathorne church at half past two o'clock.

The couple farmed from 1936 at rural Akron. They moved to LeMars in 1969. At one time Mr. Brodie operated the Brodie meat market in what is now the Meis block on 1st Ave. SW in Le Mars. Survivors are his wife, Myrna Brodie, LeMars; two sons, Robert Bruce Brodie, Sioux Falls, and Malcolm W. Brodie, rural Akron; four granddaughters, Kathlyn Saienga and Karen, Kim and Roberta Brodie; two grandsons, Brian and Craig Brodie, and two brothers, Charles and William Brodie, both of LeMars. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mae King, and four brothers, John, Ronald, Colin and Stuart.

    Robert "Bruce" Brodie, 66, of 2301 South Sherman, Sioux Falls, S.D. died Sunday, August 22, 1993, at Sioux Valley hospital in Sioux Falls, after a four-month illness of cancer.

    A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Methodist church in Sioux Falls with the Rev. Donna Kjonaas officiating. A private interment will precede the service in Woodlawn cemetery in Sioux Falls. Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation.

    Bruce was born Decemkber 19, 1926, in Le Mars, Iowa to Robert B. and Myrna O. (Richey) Brodie. He attended high school in Le Mars, Iowa and graduated from the Akron high school in 1944. Following graduation he entered the Navy V-12 program, and after his discharge, attended a radio school in Tulsa, Okla., where he received his radio engineer's license. He worked for radion stations in Sioux Falls and Mitchell, S.D., as an engineer. He managed the Warren Radio Supply in Sioux City from 1953 to 1965 when they moved to Sioux Falls and started Brodie's Certified Appliance with stores on Eighth St. and in the Western Mall. He sold the business to Karl's Appliance in 1987 and retired.

    He was a member of the Shrine, Elks Lodge, Rotary and Kiwanis organizations.

    He married L. Phyllis Albertson Sept. 17, 1950, in Sioux Falls. She died August 21, 1992 while they were vacationing in Stockholm, Sweden.

    The couple traveled the world extensively throughout their marriage. Bruce enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman. He held a private pilot's license most of his adult life. He is survived by a daughter, Roberta and her husband, Kevin Barry of Hawthorne Woods, Ill.; two sons, Brian and his wife Linda Brodie and Craig Brodie, all of Sioux Falls; four grandchildren, Matthew and Timothy Barry and Aaron and Scott Brodie; his mother Myrna Brodie of Sioux City; one brother, Malcom Brodie and his wife, Beverly of Alron; and three nieces, Kathlyn Saienga of Akron, Karen Andrew of Washington, Iowa and Kim Brodie of Salem, Mass.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, and his father, Robert and a son, Gregory in infancy.

    The death of Alastair Brodie

    of Brodie, aged 61, means the ancient chiefship of clan Brodie passes to a third generation in just over seven months. His father, Ninian, 25th chief, died in March, and the title of 27th Brodie of Brodie now devolves on Alastair's son, Alexander.

    Alastair is wrapped in personal mystery: he cut himself off from his father, divorced his wife Marie-Louise, and became estranged from his three children. He took nothing to do with Brodie Castle or what had been clan lands in Moray, evinced no interest in clan affairs, denied his family, and lived out his days in a Cambridgeshire semi-detached as a computer expert.

    His death from lung cancer twists an already bitter family feud, for shortly before his second marriage this year, he rewrote his will. On April 28,

    he wed 57-year-old divorcee Carole Lawrence in Huntingdon, a few days before having asked two of his neighbours in Houghton, Cambridgeshire, to witness a new will.

    His children were unaware of his remarriage, and have not met their stepmother. Their fear now is they may be left with absolutely nothing, and that Alexander, as heir, gains nothing but the title.

    The family remain torn by a dispute following the sale of the clan seat and family home, Brodie Castle, by grandfather Ninian in 1978 to the National Trust for Scotland. Alastair's eldest son, 33-year-old Alexander, has been embroiled in a long-running dispute over his grandfather's decision, even attempting to repossess the place.

    Alastair remained the man in the middle throughout. Yet it was the acrimonious divorce between him and his first wife, the Australian-born Mary-Louise Johnson, in 1986, which helped persuade grandfather Ninian to sell the family home.

    Alastair became alienated from his children, who now live in Paris.

    Alastair was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford. In 1968, the year he graduated, he married Mary-Louise. Alastair was drawn to the infant technology of computing.

    In their new marriage,

    Alastair and Carole maintained separate lives, he staying in Houghton, while Carole remained in her house in nearby St Ives. Her apparent intention that Alastair would be interred in Cambridgeshire has been altered. In family tradition, his remains will now be laid in the Brodie burial plot in the shadow of Brodie Castle, following his funeral in nearby Forres this Saturday. Incongruously, the tiny cemetery is all that may tangibly remain of the Brodie legacy.

    Alastair is survived by his first wife Mary-Louise, nee Johnson; his widow Carole Lawrence; and his children Alexander, Edward-Benedict, and Phaedra.
