Franz M. Goossen, 66, well known in the Mingo neighborhood passed away at his home in Marion County,
May 15, 1943. Funeral services were held at Goessel, Kansas, Tuesday, May 18, 1943.

He leaves five sons, all prosperous farmers of the Mingo community.

Our beloved husband and father was born to Mr. & Mrs. Franz H. Goossen, December 17, 1876, in Landskrone, South Russia. At the age of six months he left Russia with his parents and came to North America to make their home in Marion County, Kansas.

At the age of 19 he found himself in the need of the Saviour to bear his sins and was baptized upon the
confession of his faith by Rev. Jacob Buller on May 24, 1896, and received as a member into the Alexanderwohl Mennonite church of which he has remained a faithful member until his death.

On the twenty-fifth day of April in the year 1900 he joined hands with Susanna Duerksen, in holy matrimony and were blessed with ten sons and two adopted daughters, of whom one son, William, surpassed him in death. He lived in holy matrimony 43 years and 20 days.

He has been under a doctor's care since last September and became severely ill March 25 and finding it impossible to give him proper care at home he was taken to the Bethesda Hospital, at Goessel on April 28 where he was under good care until his death. The cause of his illness and death was heart trouble.

On Saturday morning, May 15 at 7:50 and at the age of 66 years, four months and 28 days, God called him to be at rest with Him.

He leaves to mourn, his beloved wife, nine sons, nine daughters-in-law, two adopted daughters, two sons-in-law, twenty-nine grandchildren, seven sisters, ten brothers-inlaw and innumerable relatives and friends. But we do not mourn as those without hope.

He was a great guide and aid in the spiritual as well as in the financial welfare of his children.

    FRANZ D. GOOSSEN OBITUARY

Our Father, Franz D. Goossen, was born January 22, 1901, 2 miles north and 2 miles east of Alexanderwohl Church, to Franz M. Goossen and Susanna (Duerksen) Goossen, the oldest child in a family of 10 boys.

He attended Antioch Elementary School and one year at Hillsboro Academy.

Father was baptized by Rev. P. H. Unruh and was received at that time into the membership of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.

On April 10, 1924, Franz D. Goossen and Anna Schmidt (our mother) were married in the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church with Rev. C. C. Wedel and Rev. P. H. Unruh officiating.

The newly married couple moved to a farm southwest of Hillsboro for about a year. The explored the idea
of settling in Dalhart, Texas, in construction, but Mother wanted to be on the farm so in 1926 they purchased a quarter section in Thomas County from Ray Garvey, who was in the real estate business in Colby at that time and they moved to the Mingo community southeast of Colby. Father was a real pioneer in a new settlement. He and Mother established a farmstead on the virgin prairie. He broke sod with two horses he brought from Central Kansas and a third borrowed from Ray Garvey, using a one bottom walking sod busting plow. They lived in an A-frame shelter until they could get the barn built. The center part of the barn became their dwelling while their basement house was under construction. The kitchen floor was a thick natural rug of buffalo grass that they irrigated and kept growing. The weather was cold and the clouds hung low the day they moved into their basement house. The next morning there was a blanket of snow
on the ground. Their three children, Ruth, Leona, and Levi were born in that basement house.

He was the first treasurer and one of the main organizers of the Mingo Coop Grain Co., Colby, Kansas. He also help organize the High Plains Rural Electric Cooperative of Colby and Goodland, and the North Newton Public Housing Authority. He served on the first boards of directors of those organizations. He was also a charter member of the Meadow Mennonite Church located at Mingo, Kansas, and planned and did much of the work on their church building which was dedicated in 1952.

In 1963 our parents had a farm sale and moved to North Newton. They joined the Life Enrichment Program Series at Bethel College.

In April of 1984, they moved to The Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

He leaves his three children, Ruth and her husband, George Unger, of Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada; Leona and her husband, Roland Saltzman, of Shickley, Nebraska; and Levi and his wife, Rose, of Newton, Kansas. His wife, Anna (Schmidt) Goossen predeceased him on December 21, 1988.

He also leaves four brothers, Alvin of Moundridge, Ferdinand of Goessel, Edward of Colby, and Walter of
Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and one step sister, Hilda Ratzlaff. Five brothers preceded him in death, John, William, Abraham, Heinrich, and Cornelius, and step sister, Anna Schmidt. He also leaves ten grandchildren and seven great-granddaughters. One grandson, Brian Saltzman, preceded him in death.

    OBITUARY - JOHN D. GOOSSEN

Our Lord of life and death has deemed it wisdom to call our dear husband, father, and grandfather from our
side into his heavenly home. This call to end his earthly suffering came at 1:30 p.m., Monday, February 17, 1964, in the Salem Hospital, Hillsboro, Kansas. Although we deeply mourn his departure, we bow to the Father's will and know our loved one has gone to rest.

John D. Goossen was born to Franz and Susanna (Duerksen) Goossen on October 24, 1902, in Marion County, Kansas. There he received his education and grew to manhood. The Bible training he received at the Preparatory School in Hillsboro was among his cherished memories.

Upon profession of assured faith in Jesus Christ, he was baptized May 15, 1921, by the late Rev. P.H. Unruh at the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel, Kansas.

On October 19, 1924, he married Florentine Ratzlaff with whom he shared life's joys and sorrows for almost forty years. They established their first home in the Lehigh, Kansas community and later moved to their present home west of Marion where they farmed during the past 26 years. Their family included 5 sons and 2 daughters who were taught to know the Christian way. This home was suddenly saddened at the untimely death of one son, Johnny, last year on Easter Sunday morning.

In the spring of 1943, John, together with his wife, united with the fellowship of the Hillsboro First Mennonite Church, then officiated by Rev. H. T. Unruh, where he was a loyal member. He found it a special pleasure to serve as Sunday School teacher in the Senior Men's Class, enjoying teaching in the German language.

To us as a family, he was a loving husband and father, a good provider, always sincerely interested in his children and grandchildren. To all he will be remembered for his spiritual admonitions and concern for others, and his ready testimony of a full assurance in divine salvation.

We who mourn his passing are: His sorrowing wife and companion, Florentine; his children, Alvena and husband, Wilbert Bartel of Hillsboro; Della Pyle of Wichita; Ruben of Farmington, New Mexico; Anton and wife, Linda; Raymond and wife, Marilyn; and Alfred and wife Bonnie, all of Farmington, New Mexico; 8 granddaughters and 3 grandsons; 6 brothers, Frank and Alvin of Newton, Abraham and Edward of Colby, Ferd of Hillsboro, and Walter of Stillwater, Oklahoma; and many relatives and friends.

One son, his parents, and three brothers, Wilhelm, Heinrich, and Cornelius, have preceded him in death.

During the past summer his health began to fail. Though he was often wearied from pain, he seemed ever considerate and mindful of others. His inner peace and confident hope in God's promise always sustained him. His last weeks were spent in the Salem Hospital where he remained confined until death, reaching the age of 61 years, 3 months, and 23 days.

Our dear father now has left us
It hardly seems he can be gone.
God who called him from his labors
Took him to His glory home.
In our hearts his memory lingers
    And we know 'tis vain to weep;
Tears and love can never wake him
    From his quiet peaceful sleep.

The family wishes to extend their sincerest thanks to everyone for their expression of sympathy, and for their prayers, comforting words, the kind handclasps, the cards and flowers, and every thoughtfulness shown at this time of bereavement.

In the spring of 1928 they came to Thomas County to make their new home on a farm. Here they lived about ten years and under the heavenly Father's protection and care their daily needs were always supplied. He never lost courage even when the crops of the last years were but small.

When in September 1937 the Meadow Mennonite Church, of Mingo was organized they became charter members and with great hope and joy they looked forward to the time when they would have their own standing minister. He is the first to be called to his eternal reward after the organization of the church.

In the spring of 1937 he began to complain that he was not feeling well and when his condition became alarming he consulted a physician. On November 2, he entered the Bethesda hospital as a patient. After six weeks he was dismissed and they made plans to return to their home in Thomas County, but the Lord in His wisdom had a different plan.

On April 3, 1938, he suffered a serious relapse and was brought again to the Bethesda Hospital, at Goessel, where he passed away quietly on April 23 at 4:20 A.M. His age at the time of his death was 33 years, 10 months and 25 days. His disease was kidney trouble and high blood pressure and was at times very painful.

He leaves to mourn his early death, his wife, two children, the parents, nine brothers, two foster sisters,
nine sister-in-laws, two brother-in-laws and many other relatives and friends.

    Alvin L. Goossen Obituary

Alvin L. Goossen was born February 18, 1907, nine miles southwest of Hillsboro, Kansas. His parents were Franz M. and Susanna (Duerksen) Goossen. He was the fifth one of 10 brothers. He received his elementary education in the Antioch Rural School and later also attended the Hillsboro Prepartor School for one year. At the age of 17 years, special meetings were held at the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, he realized his need of salvation in Jesus Christ. After a good Bible instruction by the pastor, he was baptized upon his confession of faith on May 31, 1925 by
Rev. Peter H. Unruh and received as a member into the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.

On October 4, 1929, he joined hands with Bertha Franz in Holy Matrimony. The Bible text Isaiah 54:10 was used in English by Rev. P. H. Unruh and Rev. C. C. Wedel spoke in German on Luke 10:42.

Shortly after the wedding they moved to a rent farm in Thomas County, Kansas. Here they lived 12 years.
In 1934 and 1935, the experience was a great drought and a world wide depression, and on top of that,Mother took sick and was hospitalized 31 days in the Spring of 1935. She had to undergo a serious surgery. It was a trying year, but God's grace proved to be sufficient. Then after the hard years there also came many good years so that in 1942 they moved on their own farm which was 3 miles south and 3/4 mile west of Mingo, Kansas.

In 1937 when the Meadow Mennonite Church was organized they became charter members of that new church. Father then was elected as Chairman to the deacon board. Since this new church did not have a standing minister, Father had a great responsibility for the spiritual welfare of the church which he enjoyed greatly. Father also has been
teaching adult Sunday School class till he had some eye trouble. In 1951 he joined the Gideon International, since then he has spoken in almost 300 churches. It was a great blessing for him to give Testaments in the name of Christ to the youth and college students.

In 1947 they were instrumental in helping the Abraham Arendt family to America through the MCC. This family had fled from South Russia to Reverenstine, Holland during World War II. They still are very thankful to us and the Lord to be in America.

On January 20, 1957, Father's health started to fail. He had an acute gall bladder attack and on October 11, 1958, he had to undergo surgery in the Colby, Kansas hospital to have the gall bladder and appendix removed. At this time he was very close to the end, but after 5 days he started to improve again, still leaving him with a weak heart. Then by the doctors suggestion they left the lovely farm on August 25, 1959 and moved to Newton. Here they made themselves at home in town and soon joined
the Newton Bible Church. Later in 1972 they joined the Garden Mennonite Church.

In fall of 1979 father and mother celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Garden Mennonite Church with all the 25 children and grandchildren present. A family picture was taken at that time.

Father and Mother have traveled into almost every state of the union and in Europe. Father had a hobby,
spent time in building replicas, such as the old 1886 Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church and the one room Antioch School House, which can be seen in the Goessel Museum. He also enjoyed his pencil collection which he often showed and gave lectures in grade schools. The harmonica he played to the praise of the Lord.

Because of ageing, they sold their home in Newton and moved on December 27, 1983 to a new apartment at the Memorial Home south of Moundridge, Kansas.
They always were happy to have their children and grandchildren come and visit them and they shared many deeds of love toward them. Father and Mother shared many joys and sorrows, but the Lord always provided grace and strength, sustaining them in faith of Him who called them.

On December 12, 1990, the Lord called mother to her heavenly home at 6:17 AM. They had lived more then 60 precious years together. After mother's death, father spent many tearful moments before the Lord his Saviour.

Father is survived by his dear children: Paul and his wife Hildegard, Wayland, Iowa; Susie and her husband Jake Barkman, Elkhart, Kansas: Alva and his wife Linda, Plevena, Kansas and Elsie of Boulder, Colorado; 13 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren; three brothers, Ferdinand, Goessel, Edward, Colby and Walter, Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

Father passed away November 22, 1997, at the age of 90 years and 9 months and 4 days.

Ferd attended Antioch grade school and Hillsboro Bible Academy, Upon his confession of faith, he was baptized by Rev. P. H. Unruh and received into the membership of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church on June 5, 1927. In his younger years, he was involved in the family house moving and farming business. After living at this location for four and a half years, they moved to another rented farm near Peabody where farming was again a great struggle. The following year Ferd and Agnes purchased his grandfather's farmstead. The struggle of the Great Depression gradually subsided. Ferd raised crops and livestock on the farm. He also worked as a carpenter, building and remodeling houses and farm buildings. Ferd designed and built their retirement
home in Goessel. Ferd and Agnes moved into their new home on November 19, 1977, and they really enjoyed living there until the present.

Ferd was very much involved in the life and activities of the church, serving on various committees. He was always faithful in his Bible Study, family devotions and prayer times, having a heart for reaching people for Christ at home and around the world. In 1967, Ferd and Agnes visited their daughter and her family who were missionaries in Africa. In addition to his involvement at Alexanderwohl, he was actively involved in Gideons International with their work in Bible distribution.

children, fourteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Although the family will miss him we look forward to seeing him in Glory.

    EDWARD D. GOOSSEN OBITUARY

Edward D. Goossen was born on October 20, 1909 near Hillsboro, Kansas to Franz and Susanna Goossen. He passed this earthly life on March 25, 2001, at the age of 91. At the time of his death, he was the lasting remaining of 10 boys. Ed attended the Antioch school through grade school, and a Bible Academy in Hillsboro, where he finished his sophomore year. While at home, the family worked with
moving houses and farming. Ed's father bought some land for each of his sons in Western Kansas. Ed and five brothers started to farm near Colby several years before he was married. On May 27, 1938 he married Rachel Rebecca Schmidt from near Walton, Kansas, at the Tabor Mennonite Church. Together they built their farmstead at 1158 County Road 22, where they lived until they moved into the Prairie Senior Living Center, where Rachel still resides.

Ed accepted the Lord as his Savior as a boy and was baptized at the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel, Kansas. Ed and Rachel were one of the founders of Meadow Mennonite Church in Mingo, which later became the Mingo Bible Church. He served in leadership positions in the church as well as teaching the adult Sunday School Class, until it became difficult for him to read. In 1948, Ed and Rachael joined the Gideons International where they were able to participate in the distribution of Bibles and New Testaments. Wherever possible he would give his testimony of his personal trust in Jesus Christ and His hope of Eternal Life. Inviting the person to do the same, he would give a personal worker's testament to
them. If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, he would invite you to do so now, so that you might have the same hope of Salvation and Eternal Life.

As a family we remember the Bible reading and prayer that was a custom everyday before the day started.
He prayed for each of the children and later grandchildren and great grandchildren. He would also pray for
other people in the community as well as many missionaries he was acquainted with. We also remember
learning the Bible verses for everyday living as they were quoted to us as needed. Mom mentioned that Dad read the Bible to her even in Prairie Senior Living Center until lately when it became impossible to do so. We are so very thankful for the spiritual guidance that our parents gave us. They gave us the foundation to live and to pass on the things of God to our children and friends.

Preceding him in death were two sons: Alden Earl and Marcus Duane, nine brothers and an adopted sister.
Ed leaves to mourn his wife Rachel, of 64 years and 10 months, three children: Elva Esther Goossen and her two adopted daughters: Aline and Winner, and Dorothy Goossen (Fortaleza, Brazil); Alden's three children: Lynn and Tami Goossen (Mingo), Gayla and Alvin Alldredge (Rogers, AR), Kerwin Goossen (Fayetteville, AR); Maurice Edward and Darlene Goossen and his children Lauriann and Stephen Goossen (Detroit, MI); James and Bonnie Berg (Colby) and their children: Marc and Crystal Berg (Atwood), Tammy

a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother William.

We will miss him greatly, but we will meet him again in eternity. Since he greatly believed in the power of
prayer he often expressed appreciation for all the prayers on his behalf. He looked forward to the returning
of our Lord and Savior but was eager to part from this life and to be forever with the Lord.

It may be in the morning when the sun is bright and strong,
And the dew is glittering sharply over the little lawn,
When the waves are laughing loudly along the shore,
    And the little birds are singing sweetly about the door;
With the long day's before you you are up with the sun,
    And the neighbors come to talk a little of all that must be done;
But, remember, that I may be the next to come in at the door,
To call you from your busy work, forever more.
As you work, your heart must watch,
For the door is on the latch in your room,
And it may be in the morning I will come.

    OBITUARY OF CORNELIUS D. GOOSSEN

Cornelius D. Goossen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Franz M. Goossen, was born September 30, 1913, in Marion County, Kansas, near Hillsboro. When he was 22 years of age he made a stand for Christ and on June 9, 1935, was baptized upon his confession of faith by Rev. P. H. Unruh and joined the Alexanderwohl Church near Goessel.

On June 2, 1942, he was united in marriage to Miss Hulda Ella Franz. To this union eight children were born. He, with his wife, established their home on a farm in Marion County and lived there about four years. From there he, with his family, moved to Thomas County on a farm five miles south from Mingo. On July 28, 1946, he joined the Meadow Mennonite Church where he remained a member until his death.

Mr. Goossen loved his family and was deeply concerned about their spiritual welfare. In the year 1951 he joined up with the Gideon workers which was dear to his heart. This work, however, he was obliged to discontinue because of illness. It was about three years ago when Mr. Goossen became aware of some internal complication which later proved to be malignant. This condition slowly became worse with some
intermission. During this time he was admitted to the hospital at different times. But on October 10 his condition became more severe which made it necessary for him to be confined to the hospital.

On November 3 at 11:15 A.M. he went home to be with the Lord at the age of 46 years, one month and three days.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Franz M. Goossen and two brothers, William and Heinrich, preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Hulda; five sons and three daughters, Vernon Alvin, Simon Walter, Andrew James, Harold John, Othelia Susan, Timothy Allen, Arleta Louise and Erna Elaine; seven brothers, Frank of Oakley, John of Marion, Abraham of Colby, Alvin of Newton, Ferdinand of Hillsboro, Edward of Colby and Walter of Musgrove, Okla.; and two adopted sisters, Mrs. Walter Schmidt of Goessel and Mrs. Sam Ratzlaff of Warden, Washington; his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Franz; brothers and sisters-in-law, relatives and friends.

    WALTER D. GOOSSEN OBITUARY

Walter D. Goossen was born the 10th son of Franz M. and Suzanna (Doerksen) Goossen on June 21, 1915 in Hillsboro, Kansas. His life was marked by faithful service to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Saved at the age of 10, he was an avid student of the Word of God.

Walter graduated from Hillsboro Bible Academy in 1933, took correspondence courses from Moody Bible Institute, and attended school in Denver. In the fall of 1941 he started his two year Bible School at Oklahoma Bible Academy. Later he attended Grace Bible Institute in Omaha, Nebraska.
On August 15, 1943, Walter married Ethel Marie Koehn of Orienta, Oklahoma. At his death, he was survived by his wife, five children, twelve grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and expecting two more great grandchildren.

Walter began serving the Lord with the "Go Ye" Mission in the spring of 1943. He taught children in Bible schools in the northeast Oklahoma area. After his marriage to Ethel, they continued their work with the "Go Ye" Mission. In the spring of 1946, Walter was ordained as a preacher/elder, Walter and Ethel served as missionaries with the Hopi Indians in Arizona for six years. Following their missionary service, Walter pastored churches in Muskogee and Stillwater, Oklahoma and Kiowa and Augusta, Kansas.

In and between serving as pastor, Walter served as deacon, elder, and Sunday School teacher in churches he attended. He was always involved in evangelistic ministry, whether talking to people along the lakeside or going door-to-door. His love for the Lord was evident in his life.

Walter also did carpentry work, and his abilities to build, fix and repair, led him back to work at the "Go Ye" Mission in his retirement years. But his enthusiasm for serving his Lord was not limited to the maintenance side. He became involved in the Prison Ministry. He didn't just teach the prisoners, but developed friendships with them.

Walter was faithful in service to the Lord. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
