      Frances was born on Feb. 4, 1918, in Beatrice, to Gerhard and Catharine (Thimm) Goossen. She attended rural school near her home through the eighth grade, completed two years of German parochial school, and graduated from Beatrice High School in 1936.

      She and Cornelius "Cornie" Von Riesen were married on Easter Sunday, March 24, 1940, lived in Enid, Okla., and Omaha until moving back to Beatrice in 1951. They were blessed with three sons.

      Frances had worked at the Beatrice Community Hospital for 20 years, and then worked in the medical records department of Beatrice Medical Clinic until she retired in 1996.

      She was a member of the First Mennonite Church and was involved with the Women's Mission Society (Ladies Aid); and had been a member of the Beatrice Rose Society.

      Frances enjoyed gardening, raising roses, needle work, music and collected greeting cards. Frances especially enjoyed time spent with her family.

      Frances Von Riesen, 97, of Beatrice, passed away at the Wymore Good Samaritan Center Tuesday morning, Dec. 8, 2015.

      She was preceded in death by her parents Gerhard and Catharine (Thimm) Goossen; husband "Cornie" (1990); an infant son Jerry (1941); son Stephen (1999); and brother John Goossen and his wife Donna.

      Survivors include her sons James Von Riesen and wife Kay of Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, and Randal Von Riesen and wife Maxine of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter-in-law Patti Von Riesen of The Woodlands, Texas; grandchildren James N. Von Riesen, Jennifer Kay Von Riesen and husband Doug Ripley, Bethany Grace Turnbaugh and husband Michael, and Brett C. Von Riesen; great-grandchildren Mackenzie, Chase and Jacob; and brother Louis Goossen and wife Martha of Beatrice.

      She was preceded in death by her parents Gerhard and Catharine (Thimm) Goossen; husband "Cornie" (1990); an infant son Jerry (1941); son Stephen (1999); and brother John Goossen and his wife Donna.

      Left with memories are her remaining two sons and their wives, a daughter-in-law, 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, as well as her brother Louis Goossen and his wife Martha of Beatrice.

      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at the First Mennonite Church, rural Beatrice, with Reverend Brett Klingenberg conducting the service and offering words of comfort. Interment will be in the First Mennonite Cemetery. The body will lie in state Thursday from 1-9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m to noon at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice with the family greeting friends from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, and at the church one hour preceding the service on Friday. A memorial has been established to the Wymore Good Samaritan Center and Women's Mission Society with Duane and Doris Claassen in charge. A family prayer service will be held at 1:45 p.m. Friday at the church.
