    • Direct na het huwelijk verhuizen de echtelieden naar Amsterdam.

      Gerhardus Theodorus begint als kleermaker in de joden-buurt van Amsterdam.

      Na de geboorte van de kinderen breekt een brand uit, waardoor de kleermakerij word verwoest. Er is geen verzekering.
      Gerhardus Theodorus drinkt steeds meer, en verdrinkt de inkomsten van het gezin. Oudste dochters Rika en Jo werken dan bij een corsettenmakerij. Zaterdags komt hun vader hun loon (waar de familie van moet leven) ophalen om te verdrinken.

      Naast het vele drinken is er nog een reden voor echtscheiding:
      Gerhardus Theodorus heeft een buitenechtelijke zoon bij een zeemansweduwe, die ongeveer even oud is als zijn jongste dochter Elisabeth Cornelia (Betsie).

      Het huwelijk wordt daarna ontbonden door echtscheiding.
      Na de scheiding kreeg Johanna Petronella de zorg voor de kinderen.
      Het (dagelijks) contact met Gerharus Theodorus werd beeindigd.
      Ten tijde van het bombardement op Rotterdam woonde hij daar.
      Na het bombardement is hij daar (in leven) gesignaleerd.
      Volgens familie-overlevering eindigt hij - aan lager wal geraakt - in een oudemannenhuis in Rotterdam.

      Johanna Petronella kreeg ter ondersteuning geld van haar familie uit Arnhem, zodat zij een rond-brei-machine kon kopen en daarmee in het levensonderhoud van de familie kon voorzien.
